Anh's Truth

Tell me about yourself.

Anh: My name is Anh. I was born in Vietnam and raised there until I moved to America when I was 10. I love makeup it’s like an art to me; it allows me to express myself. My hobbies include swimming and math. I just graduated high school and I'm headed to college.

What are your beauty struggles?

Anh: I am southeast Asian and within my culture there are a lot of people who use skin bleaching creams. And it’s crazy because a lot of cultures have that problem because everyone is trying to live up to [Eurocentric] beauty standards. My hair is frizzy compared to most Asian people. Genetically, my family's hair is poofy. I’ve always had a hard time controlling my hair and styling it.

What is your beauty routine?

Anh: When I wake up I use a tea tree oil face wash because I used to have acne. I’m pretty simple with my makeup routine. I use a bit of concealer, a couple of different brow products and mascara. My go-to product is this clay shampoo from L'oreal elvive because I have oily hair. It helps me go longer without washing my hair as often.

What make you feel unstoppable?

Anh: Now that the media has started accepting beauty from different cultures, it’s really great for people of color because we are getting visibility. Now I see myself in media and it helps give me confidence because I know there are people like me who are considered beautiful out there.

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

Anh: I got the best advice from my mom. She told me "you have to be independent; you only really have yourself to rely on. You can’t depend on other people because they can leave you." She also said "you have to love yourself because you are all you have."

What’s your self-care routine?

Anh: I paint my nails a lot. I take long showers so I can take care of my skin. And I love to workout. I listen to a little bit of everything. Some pop and hip hop. Right now my favorite song is In My Feelings by Drake!
